You can use Photos on the macOS systems to access the iCloud Photo Library hosting photos taken with your iOS devices. If your photos are in the iCloud Photo Library, then you are already using it. At a minimum, you can certainly export the Photos taken with your iOS devices to your local mac far easier using macOS Photos than you can by retrieving them from the iPhone via cable. You would know better than I what your use patterns are and how you most want to access your photos.
You too may find that smaller exported JPGs put into iCloud also lets you and your wife have them to show and share.
Within minutes they are on all of our devices (similar to Google Photos or any other cloud service). So I edit, apply metadata, export reduced size images, and add them to the iCloud Photo Library using Photos on macOS. My wife, who loves the pictures but is not the least bit inclined to learn a photo editor, likes having them accessible from her iPad or iPhone with no fuss. This makes them accessible for email, social sharing, and showing others if we are in a setting where we want to do so.
